PREREQUISITES
Civil Engineering is one of the basic branches of engineering and taking admission in this course has a few requirements. Have a look at them!
EDUCATION: It is mandatory to have done physics, chemistry, and maths in your 11th and 12th classes. This trio is often referred to as “non-medical”. In short, you cannot opt for Civil or any engineering if you haven’t taken up these subjects. You should score between 60-75% as your PCM aggregate in the board examinations.
ENTRANCE EXAMS: JEE-Mains in the prime examination to get admission to most Indian colleges. JEE-Advance is the exam to enter the might IITs. Some colleges like BIITS have their separate entrance exams too.
CUT OFF:
The cutoff simply varies for Civil Engineering in different colleges. It is, however, relatively easier to have a seat in the Civil Engineering. This branch has the lowest cutoff. You should know, the low cutoff doesn’t lower its importance in any aspect!

IITs are not the only option for an engineering college in our country. They are super hard to get into so you shouldn’t beat yourself in case you fail to get an admission. Other private colleges like the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, BIITS, etc. are extremely promising and worthy.
JEE-MAINS, ADVANCE
A good score in the infamous JEE-Mains and Advance is your key to some of the top colleges in India.
SYLLABUS: Both these examinations have questions based on PCM( Physics, chemistry, math’s) of classes 11th and 12th. The questions are Multiple-Choice-Questions or MCQ’s. Â The level of difficulty is higher for the Advance exam. You need to practice way more difficult questions if you’re aiming for JEE-Advance.
DIFFICULTY: The JEE exams are not famous for being a piece of cake. You’ll need much more than NCERT-level practice to get a decent score in the same. Many students follow coaching centers and test series to prepare for these.
HOW TO ACE THE JEE?
If it is so necessary to get into a good college, its obviously even more important to make sure you give your 100% to the JEE exams. Don’t worry, it is a piece of cake as long as you are sincere in your work and keep trying! Below are a few tips to ace the JEE exams!
- Planned Studying: Studying is way more effective when you do it systematically. Making a proper study plan or a timetable will give a sense of achievement and confidence at the end of every day.
- Study Material: JEE is a national level exam and it is not known for being an easy one. Studying for it requires a lot more than NCERT books. You will have to level up.
- Note making: Whenever you study, make sure you make notes and efficient ones at that. The notes should be such that you can visit them at the time of the exam and they provide a quick recap.
- Difficult topics first: The logic behind doing the difficult topics first is so that you can revise them before the exam. If you start doing the crucial and difficult topics right before the exam would risk a blackout.
- Practice: I think this is the most important part of your preparation. You can study all you want, but none of it would be of use if you don’t learn its applications. Practicing more and more would also increase your confidence. You should do as many mock test/sample papers as you can.
- Â Sleep: I know it may seem like cracking the JEE Â would lead to sleepless nights, but your brain needs to work efficiently when you study. Sleep is like the fuel to your brain and without proper sleep, studying would be useless. Students should have at least 8 hours of sleep every night.
SCOPE
After taking up the under graduation Civil Engineering course, there’s a wide scope of things that open up.
MBA: Doing an MBA course is a good option that reaps a good-paying job. Admissions are done through a national level entrance examination. M.tech: If you wish to continue in the field of civil engineering, M.tech is a great option. Specialization in a subject gives you immense knowledge and experience.

The pool for jobs in this field is slightly smaller. Here are the kinds of jobs available for a civil engineer:
- Structural Engineers: The designing, planning, supervision of infrastructures like bridges, buildings, and so on.
- Geotechnical Engineers: The problems related to geological factors are solved by geotechnical engineers.
- Site Engineers: The responsibility of safety, organizing, arrangements, etc. of the people working on site.
